A mono-material packaging is made from a single type of material. This makes it easier for users and consumers to dispose of the packaging after use. The material is more recyclable and has a longer life cycle. However, some products, such as industrial liquids, require packaging with a special barrier and therefore cannot usually be packaged in mono-material.
Packaging made from more sustainable materials, such as PPE and BIO-PE, is manufactured differently. The process takes longer and is more complicated than with PE due to the specific properties of the materials. For example, it is more challenging to heat sustainable material for attaching a spout for dosing. Additionally, the raw materials are usually scarcer and therefore more expensive.
Mono-material packaging and BIO-PE are sustainable options. Packaging made from a single type of material is easier to recycle after use. BIO-PE packaging, or biodegradable polyethylene, is made from at least 97% renewable resources such as sugarcane, corn, and potatoes. This material can be broken down by natural processes.
